Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game for NES (Last Updated 4/8/21)

In case you don’t know Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game is a side-scrolling beat ‘em up, and “NES” stands for “Nintendo Entertainment System.” It can be played 1 player or 2 players, and when playing 2 players the 2 players don’t alternate, they play simultaneously and there’s no way to accidentally or on purpose hurt each other. While it came out the same year as the first ninja turtles movie (1990) it is closely based on the cartoon TV series not the movie.

The different ways you can play this game are: buy the standalone NES cartridge and it should work in any system that plays NES games. Buy the Super Game 500 in 1 Multicart for NES (where it’s titled simply “Ninja Turtles 2”) and it works in original NES systems and all Retron systems except the Retron 5 and this is what we have and it works great in our Retron 2. It’s also on the Ultimate NES Remix 154 in 1 Multicart for NES, the Super Games 150 in 1 Multicart for NES, and The 100 Best Videogames 143 in 1 Multicart for NES, but not the Super Game 400 in 1 Multicart for NES, the Unlicensed Collection 142 in 1 Multicart for NES, or the Pocket Games 30 in 1 Multicart for NES. And you of course can buy the arcade machine, it’s 4 players but much more expensive and it takes up more space. These codes will work for any way you play this game except for they probably won’t work on the arcade machine.

A slice of pizza gives you full health so the lower you are in health the more useful it is to get one so a good strategy if your health is full or nearly full and you see a slice of pizza then wait until you have battled all the enemies on that screen to get it, since unlike power-ups in some other games it will never disappear on its own, and this is the only power-up in the game. After beating each level you are topped off on health for that life but do not get an extra life. Every time you destroy an enemy you get 1 point (so you can think of the points as “kills”) and your points carry over when you use a continue.

The easiest way to beat the game is use one of the first two codes below to jump to the last level (level 10) and it will also give you 10 lives per continue then you fight your way through the Technodrome towards Krang, then you fight Krang, then after defeating him you fight Shredder. Be careful not to let Shredder zap you, each time he does it kills you even if you were at full power. If you lose all your lives and continue while you don’t have to fight your way all the way through the level again you do have to beat Krang again to get another shot at defeating Shredder.
And a strategy if you are trying to “see everything that can be seen” in the game and so are playing it all the way through is if you arrive at a level with too few lives that you think you can beat that level but have one or more continues left is to just set your controller down and let enemies kill you so then you run out of lives at the beginning of the level and then use a continue and now have a full amount of lives.

The codes below need to be entered at the title screen before the demonstration begins unless stated otherwise. The “title screen” is the screen right after the black and white screen, if you start the code during the black and white screen the code will not work, and you have to enter the code fast because it’s not long before the demonstration begins. The only code you really have to memorize is the top one, because even if you don’t want to select a higher level you can just select level 1 with it. To select a level press Right and Left to select level levels 1-10 and then when the level you want is selected press “A.” When you run out of continues you have to renter the code.
