Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for PS2 (Last Updated 3/24/21)

I love Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (more commonly called GTASA), it’s like The Legend of Zelda in that there’s a big map to explore with items to help you on your quest, with guns like Half-Life, with aircraft like Pilot Wings, with building up a character’s strength like a role playing game but with no boring turn based attacks like a role playing game.

Some people say GTA games are controversial, but every videogame is controversial when you think about it, for example if you start at the beginning of 1943: The Battle of Midway for NES and play to the end of the game, you destroyed so many planes and ships that if this was real life you just killed 50,000 Japanese people and the fact is for anyone unless something is seriously wrong with them no matter how much they play a GTA game they will never go out and commit a GTA-game-style crime in real life, and if anything the GTA game got the urge to do bad stuff out of their system in a healthy and legal way, and so while GTA games did replace Mortal Kombat games as the type of games most hated by moms, I don’t think moms should be as worried as they are.

I feel sorry for the videogame families of the videogame police officers that my videogame character kills, but my videogame character has an insatiable apatite for murder and mayhem so there's nothing I can do.

In the game there’s 3 parts of the map, the first part is based on LA (Los Angeles) and the surrounding area, the second part is based on SF (San Francisco) and the surrounding area, and the third part is based on Las Vegas and the surrounding area. If you haven’t beaten enough missions yet you can still go to another part of the map but the police will come after you. Unlike Grand Theft Auto III there’s no loading time between the 3 parts of the map.

Where the 2 Player Icons are and What Characters the 2nd Player Can Choose From:
I list the different 2 player icons in the order of you can get to them without wanted levels from the beginning of the game. So 2 you can get to from the start, then you can get to the third one in SF after you beat a bunch of missions and the last 2 in Nevada after you beat yet more missions. The descriptions of the second player characters I came up with myself, they aren’t necessarily the official names for them and I don’t know of any official names for them.

2 Player Icon #1 is down the street from CJ’s house in “Idlewood” to get it leave CJ’s house and go down the street and just after you go under the second overpass go right and then left into the rear middle of a group of tiny houses and you will see it. The 6 characters you can pick from are: prostitute, gang member, Captain Pickard, gang member, White male cop, and fat Black gang member.
2 Player Icon #2 is on the side of the road in Dillimore (a small town just north of LA and it’s the first small town north of LA). The 2 player icon is on the southeast edge of town in front of a building by the road. The 6 characters you can pick from are: White girl with brown hair and blue jeans, guy with tank top a baseball hat and pants, bald headed hunchback with jeans and no shirt, cowboy, sheriff, and cowgirl with cowboy hat and cowboy boots.
2 Player Icon #3 is in SF in a place called “Kings” to get there leave where you save from (if you beat enough missions to get there) take a left (going north) then take the first left and then in between the first cross street and second street cross street on your left in a parking lot is a 2 player icon. The 6 characters you can pick from are: Hispanic gang member type 1, Hispanic gang member type 2, girl with pony tail in red 1 piece bathing suit, girl with pig tails in a sexy school girl outfit, girl with brown hair in a black corset with black panties, and Hispanic firefighter.
2 Player Icon #4 icon is in “el quebrados,” it’s a small town in the northwest part of the map. The icon is on the side of the road of the street that roughly bisects the town. The 6 characters you can pick from are: White girl with brown hair and blue jeans, White guy in overalls and baseball cap, baldheaded hunchback with jeans and no shirt, cowboy, sheriff, and cowgirl with jeans and cowboy boots.
2 Player Icon #5 is just across the street from the pirate ship in Las Vegas to the east and it’s the first building partially south. It’s in the exact middle of the rectangular-shaped building on the ground level. It’s called “Royal Casino.” The 6 characters you can pick from are: White lady in S&M outfit with breasts covered, Black Elvis, Hispanic EMT or security guard, White or Asian lady in lingerie, guy in shorts and sweatshirt, and Black firefighter.

Also after you successfully complete the Burning Desire mission where you rescue Denise (which is a mission early on in the game) a red two player free roam icon will now appear on Denise's porch near the door. The icon will appear there when she’s home and ready to go on a date. Stand on the icon and press Start on controller two to activate the icon. Do not try to kill Denise, because you will never be able to date her ever again or play in two player mode at her house ever again. Also once you get Denise, take her on a date. After you drop her off, there will be a rotating icon of two people directly in front of the door and when you walk into it it will tell you to push any button on the controller two. When you do so it will start two player mode, with both CJ and Denise in a free roam mode.

More Info About Playing in 2 Player Mode:

You can’t shoot the RPG, heat seeker, or sniper rifle in 2 player mode and can only operate one vehicle at a time except the jetpack. With the jetpack both players can have one, but only if CJ first drops his by pressing Triangle (and this only works when he’s on the ground) and makes a new one, and then the second player gets the one he dropped. The 2 players can accidentally or on purpose hurt or kill each other and can get in each other’s way. There’re some limits on how far they can go from each other. Some aircraft can only have one player inside at a time, but the second player can always ride on top. To see the name of the area during game play press Start then go to map, then press X, and now you can look around zoomed in and it will tell you the name of the area (this can help you find the 2 player icons mentioned above). Note while in 2 player mode you can still view the map zoomed out but it won’t let you zoom in on the map. Also when the second player presses Start, nothing happens. The second player will have all the weapons CJ has but not his bulletproof vest if he has one. In 2 player mode when you die or get busted you won’t start at the hospital or police station and have no weapons, you instead start at the 2 player icon that was activated and CJ still has whatever weapons, ammo, and armor he had when the 2 player icon was last activated (even if in 2 player mode some or all of this stuff was used up) and CJ can choose to touch the 2 player icon again. You can’t go on any missions in 2 player mode, not even a vigilante mission, and you can’t go inside buildings that normally have a lit up icon by the doors (like CJ’s house) so you can’t save the game. The second player in a vehicle has a target that can be moved around to shoot the MAC-10 in all directions, including when inside a plane. There’s a way for the 2nd player to shoot other guns as a passenger. If the passenger rides on top they of course can shoot all weapons like normal. The Cessna and all of the helicopters (except the Apache) 2 players can fit inside. The Learjet, stunt plane, and Harrier only 1 player can fit inside. The hovercraft only 1 player can fit inside.

Vigilante Missions:

If you have a police vehicle you can go on a vigilante mission (push R3 to start) and in addition to police vehicles it works with the Hunter (Apache Helicopter) but not with any other vehicle. The Apache Helicopter has the most powerful rapid-fire gun in the game and it fires missiles straight ahead of the same type of missiles as the Harrier. The Harrier can also lock on a target vehicle and when it goes from green to red you can fire a heat-seeking missile (and this works not only against aircraft, but also cars, trucks, vans, and motorcycles). The heat-seeking missile is not as powerful a missile as the straight forward firing missiles. Harriers can also drop flares to confuse enemy Harrier heat-seeking missiles (which is the only type they shoot and they only shoot them if you are in an aircraft) or the heat-seeking surface-to-air missiles from the surface to air missile installations. There’re 4 surface-to-air missile installations around the Nevada army base, and 1 in front of the conning tower and 1 behind it on the amphibious assault ship. Vigilante missions get increasingly more difficult the more you play them. First it’s just 1 criminal in 1 vehicle then eventually it’s 2 criminals in 1 vehicle and then multiple criminals in multiple vehicles. The easiest way to beat a vigilante missions (if you haven’t completed enough missions to go to Nevada without the police coming after you) is take the Apache out over the ocean east of LA then activate the vigilante missions and then the criminals will be on roads near the coast and you will then have an unobstructed view of them to then use the Apache’s gun and missiles on. When the criminal’s vehicle stops or slows down (like due to being stuck in traffic, for example, or when it’s on fire from being shot with the gun which then causes the criminals to always try and get out and try to run away from it before it explodes) then you can open up with missiles at the same time as the gun, otherwise you have to either lead the vehicle with missiles or fire straight at it with the gun. And if you have completed enough missions to go to Nevada without the police coming after you then there’s a highway out in the desert west of Las Vegas that is also a good location to go vigilante missions in the Apache.

Where to Find Weapons, Bulletproof Vests, and the Parachute:

The MAC-10 is under an overpass behind CJ’s house. One of the many places to get a bulletproof vest is underneath a different overpass right next to the overpass that has the MAC-10 under it. The parachute is on top of the tallest building in LA, you can land on top with an aircraft or go to the base of the building and touch the yellow icon and then you appear at the top. The RPG is on the roof of a tall building near the tallest building in LA and it has a tall antenna in the middle of it. The sniper rifle is at the top of the stairs of the studio building in LA. The M4 is in the southeast corner of the Nevada military base and at the west end of the airstrip of the LA airport. To get the grenades leave CJ’s house and go straight, after the railroad tracks take a left, then they’re on your right on the second story of an apartment complex. The AK-47 is underneath the stairs inside a warehouse near the LA airport. The pump action shotgun (with 30 rounds), pistol, 2 bulletproof vests, and a purple double dildo is in the police station in LA, the easiest way to find out where that is is let the cops bust you (they do this if you sit in a vehicle while they’re after you and let them touch you.), then you will spawn right outside of it (Note: Once you pick up the pump action shotgun or the pistol your wanted level goes from 0 to 2 stars and the police will come after you, but they don’t care if you get a bulletproof vest or the double dildo). The double barrel shotgun is in a railroad car near the LA airport. The flowers are by a house east of the golf course at the top of Nevada. The brass knuckles are under the overpass near bushes on the side of the road by CJ’s house. If you get them then whenever you select fist they will be there. I was worried they might slow CJ down when CJ has them so I chose not to save my game with them, since I don’t select fist for fighting, I just select fist for running. The mini gun is at the bottom of the parking garage in north east Las Vegas and also on top of the railroad bridge near SF on top of a support, but you will need to parachute down from an aircraft or use the jetpack to get to it. You also get the mini gun on a mission at the Nevada military base but that is over halfway through the missions in the game. The heat-seeking rocket launcher is at the airport in SF at the edge near the water. The katana (samurai sword) is on the pirate ship in Las Vegas. There also is a katana (samurai sword) and M4 and cane in southeast Las Vegas. You do get a katana (samurai sword) with the yakuza theme code but it’s not in any weapons set code and there’s a weapons set code that includes the heat-seeking missile but there’s no code for the mini gun. The shovel is in the backyard of the first house west of CJ’s house. The spray paint is on the roof of the building in back of CJ’s house. You can use the spray paint as a crappy weapon as well as to cover enemy gang members’ spray paint and once covered it will stay covered and it keeps track of how many of them you have covered. To get the spray paint without a vehicle climb up on the fence by CJ’s house’s garage and get up on the garage. Then from there climb up onto the roof of CJ’s house then go to the back and drop down to the roof of the building behind CJ’s house and you will see the spray paint. The TEC-9 is on the roof of the second house northeast of CJ’s house. To get it without a vehicle climb up on the wall by the basketball hoop and then climb up onto the roof. It’s best to stick with the MAC-10, that’s what SWAT team members use (so you can use them as an ammo source) and it’s easier to get one than the TEC-9. There’s smoke grenades near the tower of the main Nevada airport. Ordinary police officers give you a pistol and a baton and on rare occasion a pump action shotgun and 5 rounds. SWAT team members give you the MAC-10. You get no additional items when getting on a police motorcycle. If you go in a police car or 4x4 truck you get a pump action shotgun with 5 rounds. If you go in a SWAT team van you get a bulletproof vest.

Where to Find Vehicles:

Some aircraft there're no codes for and so you can only get them if you go where they’re at (or pass enough missions). To get the Cessna or Learjet, leave CJ’s house and drive straight down the road. When you hit the railroad tracks take a left and drive on them. After they curve around you will see a road with a jump on the left, take a left there and go straight and then you will arrive at the gate of the airport, but they won’t open it unless you have enough pilot experience (if you fly enough you will have enough experience and they will open the gate for you even if you haven’t beat any missions) but you can still get in if you jump up on the side of the booth and hold on, then climb up, then go straight. The Cessna is ahead on the right. The Learjet is farther straight then to the far right.
There’s 2 amphibious 1950s style helicopters (Bell 47) with a machinegun underneath (They call it a SEA SPARROW) one is at the bottom of the dam in Nevada; the other is at the top middle of the map in the water.
There's a leviathan (Sea King) at the Las Vegas airport near the tower, it's also amphibious. There's a Russian transport helicopter at the Nevada military base.
The helicopter that is used a lot by news crews and police (Bell 206) is called in the game the “maverick” and there’s one on the helipad near the cove in the northwest part of the map across from SF and one near the water at the SF airport. The “float plane” in the game is called the “skimmer” and there’s one in the cove east of SF and at the bottom of the dam in Nevada.
On my most advanced game there’s 2 Harriers by the 2 hangers in the Nevada military base. There’s also 2 C47s they call them “Nevada” at the SF airport and a twin propeller engine cargo aircraft they call a “Beagle.” There’s also at the SF airport a P-51 Mustang they call a “Rustler” and a helicopter they call a “Raindance” in addition to a leviathan, and multiple Cessnas and Learjets and a Bell 206. And at my bone yard base in Nevada there’s a P-51, a Harrier, a leviathan, and a jetpack in addition to the up to 4 aircraft I can save in my hanger. And in the huge hanger at the main Nevada airport if you walk up to it the door opens and there’s an “AT-400” (747) and for some reason is only there after I die, and you can only get in it from the ramp in its hanger.
The Monster truck is at a trailer park south of SF and west of LA.

Beating GTASA:

I have beaten GTASA and most of the missions are pretty straight forward but the ones that got me stuck for a little bit are:

The one where you have to date a girl in Las Vegas and get a keycard: she will only date you if you have enough muscle (to get this I put a book on my controller as a weight and let CJ run against a fence for a while) and a nice enough car (I used a nice sports car in perfect condition) and then you have to take her on a date at a place that looks nice to her and I did all this and she still wouldn’t give me the keycard so I kept repeating the mission, taking her to different places that she liked, etc, then I got pissed off and just killed her after a date when she wouldn’t give me the keycard, then to my surprise the keycard falls on the ground and now the cops are after me and I have to run away with it!

The one where you have to recruit members of your gang to go on the next mission: I tried lots of stuff and couldn’t figure out how to recruit any gang members. I finally figured out you have to target a gang member of your gang like you would if you were going to attack him, and then press Up and then he is now recruited and will now follow you around!

The one where you have to take back lots of hoods: I made the mistake of not having enough ammo for the M4 and then I’d switch to the MAC-10 which isn’t as lethal to enemies and it took me a while to take back enough hoods.

The last mission of the game: it’s really like 3 really hard missions all in 1. First you have to steal the police APC (Armored Personnel Carrier) and the easiest and quickest way is to fire RPGs at the cars that have enemies standing by them and then you never lose any health from them. Then you go into the building and shoot your way to the boss. I still was making the mistake of not having enough ammo for the M4, I eventually just went to Ammu-Nation (the chain of gun stores in the game) and bought a bunch of them, I was trying to save money for buying houses is why I didn’t do this earlier, but if you have more patience (and want to build up your driving skill level) then a better plan is keep driving to the airport in SF and pick up the M4 then go back to CJ’s first house and save, and then keep repeating this process over and over again until you have lots of ammo for it. Then you battle the boss. Then you defeat the boss. Then the building is on fire and you have to fight your way out and avoid fires. Then you have to chase a car while shooting at it. Then you finally beat the game and the credits roll! Then I was surprised to find you can still continue on with the game, even though you beat the game and saw the credits and everything. I did a casino heist and got even more money and then it gives me a mission where I have to go drive a car and do a bunch of fancy moves with it in a certain amount of time. Some of the moves I know what they mean (for example I know doing donuts is driving in circles), some I don’t, so I will have to research how to do those moves online before I can beat this mission.

Extra GTASA Info:

Water is just like hot lava for police (but not you), so when they fall in they instantly die.

If you run in CJ’s house (or any house you own) the police can’t follow you inside and after you save your wanted level drops to 0. When you save all weapons you have picked up regenerate. And all vehicles are still where they were parked if you continue playing right then. If you save and loaded the saved game later parked vehicles not in the garage will disappear. Each time you save your health meter goes to full after saving, but your armor level stays the same unless you get a new bulletproof vest.

When you park vehicles in a garage or hanger they will always be there from now on if you save the game and they stay positioned the same way you left them, and with the same radio station turned on (or radio tuned off), so I back mine in and if they have a radio tune it in to my favorite station.

If you're driving a vehicle you can shoot a 9mm submachine gun directly to the right or left, but not forward except motorcycles which can also shoot straight forward.

All vehicles have infinite fuel and never have mechanical problems for no reason and if an aircraft gets damaged it flies like a damages aircraft (so does not handle as well) and if a car, truck, van, or motorcycle gets a flat tire then it drives like a vehicle with flat tire (so does not handle as well).

If you jump out of an aircraft over the water no matter how high you are up in the air you won’t die or get hurt from the fall if the water is deep enough. Also if you jump out of an amphibious aircraft over the water the aircraft won’t be destroyed or sink and will just fall out of the sky to then sit waiting for you on top of the water.

When you fly an aircraft out over the ocean the ocean continues forever, even if you fly for 30 minutes you will never see any land and it now will take you 30 minutes if you want to fly back to land.

There's never more than 1 Harrier and 2 helicopters after you at any one time, except for on one mission where there are multiple Harriers after you.

To deploy the parachute press Circle while falling from up high, to detach from it press Triangle. You can reuse the same parachute even if you detach from it after you touch the ground and unlike with weapons you will still have it after you die.

When using cheats and saving there's a warning that it can corrupt your save, so I never saved a GTASA game after using cheats. I did use cheats and ignore the warning in GTA 3 and then half my saved games it said the saved game had become corrupted and it won’t load the game so I learned my lesson when I later got GTASA. Also in GTASA it’s easier to find weapons so there's less of a need for using cheats and saving.

While you can buy clothes for your character the farthest you can strip him down is to his boxers unless you activate the kinky theme code and have him stand still near prostitutes, then they will come steal all of his clothes, even his boxers, and he’ll be completely naked! I don’t like my character naked and don’t save with cheats activated but it’s funny to know.

A funny bug I discovered is if you're playing 2 player and try and fire the heat-seeker rocket launcher it will let your character magically slide around!

To have a stronger car that is much harder to dent and damage, enable the “Deadly vehicle” code, enter a vehicle, then disable the code while you are in the vehicle. Note: this code will eventually wear off if you run into lots of vehicles with the same vehicle. It runs out faster when the “Destroy all vehicles” code is enabled over thirty times. Also, if you enable this code when inside a vehicle, the vehicle will explode other vehicles on contact, but your vehicles will not be “shielded” as it would be if you entered this code before entering the vehicle, which then results in your vehicle exploding as well. If you do happen to enable this code inside a vehicle, get out, then get back in and it should function normally.

Manual Weapon Control Drive Bys in Cars:
